Iceland
Far from the European mainland and close to the Arctic Circle lies the volcanic island of Iceland. While in 1950 all the 5000 tourists visited the island, the picture has now turned huge. Puffin

Puffin
Clowns in a black evening dress or even everyone's favorite. Puffins come ashore only to breed, while other times they are exclusively on the sea.
Puffins (Fratercula arctica)
Puffins are expected to seabird of the auk family. Actually, you get it only in the breeding season to face, otherwise they are on the year, at home on the sea. They fly low over the sea, and always with the waves.
As you can see the North Atlantic circulation, but also the western Arctic Ocean. In Europe, the species in Greenland, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Spitsbergen before, Jan Mayen, Norway, Ireland, and sometimes on the Bear Island and Novaya Zemlya. By the year 1830 could prove to the puffins in Helgoland.
In burrows just beneath the turf they receive in the summer months from June to August these caves there and do their breeding. So funny look like those birds too, so they can - say so - even stink.
With the exception of the birds in flight, this flight seems quite awkward, and even a little stagger and you are quick to believe that there are bad flyers. But this can not be left unchallenged, because the birds lay remarkably long distances from Europe to New Zealand and Africa. In addition to these flight characteristics also impressed with the performance in scuba diving. With up to 60 meters depth encounter these birds down in search of food. Sometimes we succeed you in this up to catch sand eels and 10 to carry in its beak. The home then transportation is not always as smooth as the skua (Great Skua fall) are often in fierce attacks on these animals to help them snatch fish caught. In this respect, a puffin will always choose the direct route immediately to the nest or hole in the ground. The colored triangular beak and the curvature are not congenital and are formed out in the course of time. In the first two years one can see the young birds as not so good.
In Iceland, the puffin is considered a delicacy, at least the chest. Every year there are about 60 000 of these seabirds caught and end up in the cooking pot. Only the breast is desirable for the pot, all the rest is thrown away. The current situation is that these seabirds in Iceland has already become rare. The fact that many birds here to be snuffed out was made is apparently not the cause. Nor can it be assumed that the animals were unavailable because of overfishing, the fodder base of sand eels. The fishing nets are - at least in Iceland - so loosely that the small sand eels fall through it.
The current situation in Iceland is the following, that is always lower for about five years, the presence of this seabird. One tries in studies now find out what it is and what the causes of a failure, this seabirds. On the Faroe Islands, also those birds are caught in substantial numbers, but still no one knows the problems of a lack of this seabird. It must have other causes.
Did you recently catch on the Westman Islands plans - in a kind of action for tourists - puffins, demonstration by bird catchers and then again to release, so now no one speaks of such a spectacular contribution. Rather, we would be happy in Iceland, if one could find today at all 60 000 puffins. Not even 1 / 10 of it is still available!

Attacking Arctic tern
In the breeding season and especially if you disturb the breeding grounds of these birds to lay the terns to an aggressive behavior. The congregation - if one may say so - the attacks are usually flown from the rear. You notice this at the latest when it has gotten a beak.
Attacking terns
If you choose to visit Iceland again, then surely also be seen in the light as much as possible. To that extent you will be very active and always on the go. Everywhere, but they are not solicited, should read: If you enter even unexpectedly in the area of breeding seabirds.
NO, a human supervisor in the form of a nature conservation does not prevent you, but here the birds take to help themselves. Thus, the Arctic tern sets during the breeding season to an extremely aggressive behavior and violent attacks against the intruder flies. It is not only false attacks. Sometimes, the terns really deal beak (Alfred Hitchcock, "The birds greet") can be. The attacks are usually flown from the back, always accompanied by a hellish screams of the animals. The birds are already active when you are approaching only its breeding range.
It becomes difficult when you must pass his way in this area must continue and if no other guidance can take! One can but the birds easily with a stick or rod to keep at bay. They think now on a kind of weapon. NO, that would already be over the little animals is not fair and very grossly. Wear rather stick or rod, stretched vertically well above her head in the level, the attacks now take the lead. Instead you have to say you will give you the tip, since the birds always attack the highest point and that would be the top end of the stick.
Another seabird has the behavior of its territory for attacking a fault, it is the skua (Great Skua). It already flies attack if you are still far from their area. The skua is much larger than the little tern. It's been a special experience, if such a skua with a wingspan of up to 150 cm in a dive store for you. However, I could see that the birds always gained back the amount if you made a violent and forceful gesture in their direction.

Icelandic horse
The Icelandic horse breed is considered the most pure in the world and we are extremely concerned that this remains so. Thus, a horse Iceland are indeed exported but not again be introduced.
Icelanders - people with expertise horses!
For over 900 years, the horse is in Iceland. In this long period mean you are on you and you came. But this does not always pan out so smoothly.
I was always amazed that "Horsemanship" of the people in Iceland. So I once heard the following case:
Father and son once rode away together. After a while she had ridden side by side, the father told the son: "Can we maybe even replace the horses, I would just like to ride on your horse." The son did not object and consented. While they continued their ride horses exchanged so with the son suddenly said to his father: "Look father, he starts to be crazy now, I know him ..."! And so it was then, suddenly the prank was in the horse and began to make rodeo, but not the father fell from his horse as a rider but the horse fell down....!
After both were lying on the floor, the father took the horse in a Double Nelson and had it not let go and held it down. The son he was, the nearest farm to ride, bring along ropes, belts and straps. A little surprised the son asked: "Father what do you want if you want to shoot him, then do it immediately and without much work." The father repeated his silence and said in addition: "I do not want the horse gets up rather than me," so get the ropes and straps.
After a while the son went back with the required things and the father asked him to tie up all the legs of the horse and tie the strap properly.
After this work carried, They continued their way on foot, stopped at an inn, ate a meal, drank a brandy and coffee. Everything they went on very slowly and without haste, it took everything a long time. After hours, you went back to the horse. Loosened the ropes and belts tied the horse and put it on after a while their ride.
The horse was now no anymore crazy and never more Rodeo. Truly, people with high expertise horses. Not one blow, blow, or blow had replied the farmer and the horse won he knew he could drive out the bad habits.
One has to know that it is the highest sentence for a horse when it is bound. Blows and blows are even painful for a horse, but a permanent sound doctrine is not well achieved. Rather, one makes such an animal by blows and blows and stubborn!
If you at first glance the concept Horsemanship know what to do, at the latest after reading this little story, we know what we mean.

Icelandic horses
The horse has played in Iceland, a major contribution to the development of the country. Without their presence the development and progress of the country would certainly be slower.

Herd of horses on Eyjafjöršur
The horses are summer and winter, with no stabling at pasture, is only fed in the winter! Otherwise they are left to themselves.
The five gaits of the Icelandic horse
As a rule, is innate to the Icelandic horses, the fifth gear. This refers to the gait. Nevertheless, not every horse is also a "five-course", ie gait. It is called for in Iceland of four-and five-horses horses. While in earlier times, all the European horses dominated the pace of the canter, this can now only the Icelandic horse.
What happens is that here the horses that gait is lost?
Now, as the main cause we can probably make up over breeding for this, because the horses were turned for a variety of issues and special features pushed, for example, pure coach-horses, carriage horses, trotting, galloping horses, pure work horse was etc. For each of horse that is another character desired and breed.
As already mentioned, and noted there are four-and five-speed horses. The fifth gait the gait a horse chooses not alone, but the rider must ask it to do so. This is not so simple and there is already a bit of flair to it. A little help you can give as a rider but the horse had by shifting his weight slightly to the rear. In most cases this is sufficient already. There are also horses that are by themselves in the gait and gait know this almost exclusively. If you have such a horse under the saddle, the rider needs to do nothing, so to speak, and can count on the "automatic" effect. While horses gallop and trot have a suspension phase, this is not the case at the canter, but here is a before been running gait. If you buy a horse in Iceland, suggests, of course, the purchase price reflected in a difference between four-and five-speed horse. Other gauges of whether it is a good or moderately gifted Töltés flow then also in the purchase price. A good tölting horse in Iceland may have cost a small fortune.
One has the greatest concern in Iceland, to distinguish the breed pure, but also in a healthy stock. This was how the strict rules in her riding clothes and riding accessories with the entry. It has been - not unfounded - fears that there may be here on the import or Down Scuffs and Clogs any of these viruses and diseases, or even an epidemic could be introduced. An original Icelandic Veterinarian: "With such a potential epidemic, we were overwhelmed with our resources." A same rigor applies even when an export of a domestic horse. If a horse once left the island, it can - the Icelandic legal provisions under - no more will be returned to Iceland, not even when it was born there. One reason why an Icelander takes at international championships never his best horse.
