Catering and food
An inn or restaurant visit in Iceland is extremely expensive. Even a simple dish like a pizza - this is certainly not a superior court is proposing - now with about 15 euros. What could be more natural than that one even cared. But here is waiting for the next surprise. The food prices are considerably more expensive than in Germany. Principal reason for this is that the Icelandic government - in order not to be dependent on imports - agricultural subsidies. Additional measures such as protective tariffs are added to strengthen local agriculture. However, climatic conditions can be only a very limited agriculture, and Iceland is still to a great extent obliged to import many agricultural products. Of course, these measures suggest then fully reflected in a higher price level.
Thus it is necessary to maneuver as a tourist to as much as possible through this supply problem. The best way to get there, or to the purchase of noodles, they have almost German price level. Expensive meat and meat products, but also cheese and fish. In the latter coming in a bit of understanding to since we all know that Iceland is a fishing nation. The reasons for the inflation that is all I have had to explain to me, is that Iceland does not have a canned food processing. The fish is sent to processing plants in Denmark and after processing - for domestic needs - back again. Whether all this is still the case today, I can not say with certainty. Whatever the case, the high prices have remained generally.
Although the Icelandic government on 1 March 2008 the tax on food reduced from 14% to 7%, but I had the impression that here is a price cut was passed on to consumers!
Before leaving on his trip should be done really thought:
What do I take the best of food with?
Which foods can I stretch the food the most?
such as soups, quickfoods, 5-minute tureen etc. come to mind.
Actually you should bay the food in Iceland on the theme: The menu is determined solely by the special offers of the supermarket!
